Viral TikTok Videos Of Tom Cruise Are Terrifyingly Accurate Deepfakes

( – Powerful software using artificial intelligence (AI) called deep learning has revolutionized disinformation by creating deepfakes, videos of fake people, and events. If you saw Jon Snow’s apology for the ending of HBO’s Game of Thrones, you’ve seen a deepfake in action.

On March 2, the Daily Mail reported a series of three deepfakes of Tom Cruise went viral on TikTok, racking up millions of views. One clip shows a fake Tom Cruise waving his hand in front of his face saying, “It is the real thing.”

Another one shows him walking through a retail store joking around about the time he met Mikhail Gorbachev, the former head of the Soviet Union. The clip below shows him playing golf and telling TikTok users, if they like what they see, “just wait [for] what’s coming next.”

At least for now, there’s little that can be done to combat deepfakes, and the technology behind them will only improve with time. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) recently discussed their potential harm. The senator lamented that in the past, you needed “aircraft carriers… nuclear weapons, and long-range missiles” to attack the United States. Nowadays, all the nation’s enemies need is an internet connection and some “realistic fake video” to create a “tremendous crisis.”
