(RepublicanPress.org) – The director of National Intelligence (DNI) heads up the intelligence community and advises the president and others on intelligence matters related to national security. DNI Avril Haines’ office warned the nation about several key issues in its Annual Threat Assessment of the U.S. Intelligence Community.
The April 13 report detailed concerns regarding Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea. It also touched on the potential impact of climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to DNI Haines’ opening statement for the report, China is expected to continue its efforts to gain a dominant role in global affairs, presenting a “formidable challenge” to the US’s international role. Russia will continue to “undermine US influence and erode Western alliances.”
Iran will seek to “deflect international pressure,” and is also “pursuing a permanent” presence in Syria and threaten Israel. North Korea “will seek” to create conflict between the US and its allies, and might resume its efforts to build nuclear weapons and test intercontinental ballistic missiles.
The report also warned of “intense and cascading global challenges” associated with climate change, disease, financial crises, and emerging technologies.
DNI Haines told members of the Senate Intelligence Committee that these “longstanding and emerging threats” call for “greater vigilance” to protect our “vital national interests.” Let’s hope she’s up to the task.
