Tuberville Won’t Budge on Military Promotion Blockade

Tuberville Won't Budge on Abortion Policy

( – In February, Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) started holding up military promotions in protest. The first-time senator’s reason for blocking the nominations comes down to the issue of abortion. Tuberville doesn’t like the Pentagon’s current women’s healthcare policy, stating that all troops have equal access to reproductive care — including abortions. The Alabama Republican wants the policy to change. In the meantime, many say he’s putting America’s national security at risk.

On September 12, Tuberville reiterated his stance on Bloomberg TV, stating he told the Pentagon he would block the promotion of its “admirals and generals” unless there was a change in the abortion policy. The number of promotions being blocked has reportedly ballooned into the hundreds, affecting every branch of the military. Still, Tuberville’s issue lies in how the Biden administration changed the abortion policy without a congressional vote. He said, “We are not a communist country.”

After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, states across the nation began passing laws regarding abortion. Military members assigned to bases in those states were affected. So, the Pentagon decided it was best for the military to offer aid to service members and their families who were now being forced to travel for abortion services to pro-choice states. Tuberville disagreed with the move and decided to unilaterally stop all military members from advancing in rank and pay. Now, there are open positions of leadership that remain unfilled.

Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) told Bloomberg Radio that former President Ronald Reagan would be appalled at Tuberville’s behavior. He said these “antics” weaken the US military and the United States in general.

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) called on her colleagues to put more pressure on Tuberville to stop the blocks. On MSNBC, she accused the Louisiana senator of “playing politics with our military and our safety.”

Still, Tuberville said he will not budge until he gets his way, regardless of the effect his actions are having on the country or military members and their families.
