Soap Actor Dies at Just 50

(RepublicanPress.org) – From 1996 to 2016, actor Tyler Christopher played Nikolas Cassadine on the daytime soap opera “General Hospital.” After leaving that role, he became Stefan DiMera — the long-lost son of crime lord and all-around bad guy Stefano DiMera — on the long-running soap “Days of Our Lives.” He stayed in that role for two years. Recently, one of his former co-stars from “General Hospital” made a devastating announcement on social media.

On October 31, actor Maurice Benard posted on Instagram that his friend and former colleague had passed away from a “cardiac event in his San Diego apartment” at just 50 years old. It’s unclear if the shared cause of death has been confirmed. Bernard said Christopher was a “sweet soul” and a cherished friend to everyone “who knew him.” He felt it was important to note how his fellow thespian was not only a talented actor but was also a vocal advocate for those struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues.

Christopher himself suffered from bipolar depression and problems with alcohol. He was open about his treatment and pushed for better treatment for those in similar positions. Benard said he was “beyond devastated,” sending his condolences out to the actor’s dad and his children.

Executive Producer Frank Valentini from “General Hospital” also posted about Christopher’s passing, calling the actor incredibly talented as well as a “dear friend” who was well-loved. Valentini said he was “heartbroken” over losing him.

The actor’s representative, Chi Muoi Lo, released a statement to CBS News calling Christopher’s death “shocking.” He relayed a similar sentiment to the other two, sharing how “devastated” he was to have lost such an “amazing friend.” He sent condolences out to the actor’s family and friends.

According to the news source, Tyler Christopher was nominated for four Daytime Emmys for his exemplary portrayal of the characters in his soap opera roles. In 2016, he won the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Dramatic Television Series.
