Ron DeSantis Signs Bill to Support Second Amendment in Churches

( – President Biden announced increased measures to restrict gun rights during a White House press briefing on June 23. Those limitations build upon a series of six measures detailed in an April fact sheet. However, Republican-led states continue to expand gun owners’ rights despite those efforts by the Biden administration.

Most recently, on June 29, Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis signed a new measure into law allowing individuals with a concealed carry permit to bring firearms with them to churches, synagogues, and other religious facilities and to any property owned by or leased to them.

The legislation, HB 259, does acknowledge the right of religious institutions to dictate what happens inside their own facilities. Under the measure, they still retain the right to decide whether or not to allow guns on their property without government intervention.

As one might expect, gun rights groups applauded the bill’s passage as a “step in the right direction.” However, some say as well-intentioned as it might be, it falls short of their hopes.

Gun rights group Florida Gun Rights wants to see Florida added to the 21 states that have legalized Constitutional Carry. For those unfamiliar with the term, gun owners can carry weapons openly or concealed in Constitutional Carry states.

DeSantis hasn’t publicly spoken out on Constitutional Carry, according to Florida Gun Rights. However, he has a strong record of standing up for Floridians’ rights and pushing back against oppressive federal restrictions in other areas.
