Residents Shocked As Bear Caught Browsing Aisles at Supermarket

( – There’s nothing quite like the hustle and bustle of shopping in a crowded grocery store on the weekend. However, on August 7, shoppers at a Ralphs grocery store in Porter Ranch, California, had quite a surprise waiting for them.

Police officers from the nearby Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) responded to a 6:45 a.m. call that three bears were spotted wandering the supermarket’s aisles. When officers arrived, only one bear remained — a 125-pound male cub.

A few shoppers attempted to feed it, but it didn’t appear interested in their food. Police officers chased the bear to the outside parking lot, where US Fish and Wildlife Service officers waited. They eventually cornered the wild animal in a fenced-in area behind the strip mall, and control officers tranquilized it for transport to a suitable location.

Fortunately, officials reported no injuries or property damage as a result of the incident. However, bear encounters can present serious risks to humans. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife warns people not to confront a bear if they encounter one. They should take care not to block exits and don’t try to run — slowly back away instead. Above all, please don’t attempt to feed bears since it only encourages them to return.
