Rapper Taken Into Custody After Winning Multiple Grammys

(RepublicanPress.org) – The 66th Grammy Awards aired recently at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California. While much of the hype surrounding award shows centers around the red carpet, who will host, what artists will win, and who will sing, award show drama sometimes makes it into the mix. In 2022, it was the Academy Awards where actor Will Smith smacked comedian Chris Rock on stage. This time, it was less public. It involved the police and a popular rap artist — before the live show.

On February 4, The Hollywood Reporter Senior Staff Writer Chris Gardner shared a video on social media of police leading Rapper Killer Mike away in handcuffs. The incident happened right after he won three Grammy Awards, sweeping all the categories in which he was nominated. He won Best Rap Song, Best Rap Album, and Best Rap Performance, beating out other heavy hitters in the musical field like Nicki Minaj and Drake.

CBS News reported that Killer Mike danced around on stage after his win, declaring no one could tell him it’s “too late” or that you’re “too old” to have your “dreams come true.” He said his dream from when he was a little boy was to “become a part of music,” and he was excited to make that a reality. Soon after his acceptance speech, which happened before the live broadcast, police arrived and arrested the rapper.

According to ET, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said Michael Render (Killer Mike) was arrested for an alleged “physical altercation…at the 700 block of Chick Hearn Court.” The 48-year-old rapper was booked for a misdemeanor and “released on zero bail.” The Grammy Award winner has not made a public announcement about his arrest. ET reported that Grammy Chief Harvey Mason Jr. was on the phone and standing with the rapper’s team following the incident.

According to Variety, a legal representative for Killer Mike said that the rapper was released from custody. In a statement to reporters, Killer Mike confirmed that he was “better than okay,” and that while they “experienced an overzealous security guard,” he felt confident that he would be found innocent of any wrongdoing.
