( – Recently retired Chinese professional tennis player Peng Shuai abruptly disappeared from public view in late 2021. At the time, she made a stunning accusation against Zhang Gaoli, a former Vice Premier of China and member of China’s Politburo’s Standing Committee, and promptly fell out of the public eye. However, Peng recently reemerged, and now she’s telling French sports newspaper L’Equipe the whole thing was a misunderstanding.

Peng reportedly accused Gaoli of sexually assaulting her in a November 2021 post on the Chinese social media site Weibo. The post mysteriously disappeared, and news agencies reported that Chinese internet providers restricted searches for Peng.

The former tennis player appeared to disappear from public life until December, when she told a Singapore-based newspaper that she never made such claims. Then on Monday, February 7, L’Equipe published an interview with Peng.

Peng again told the newspaper she never claimed anyone assaulted her. According to her, the whole thing was “an enormous misunderstanding from the outside world.” She went on to say she hoped people would quit misrepresenting the meaning of her post.

L’Equipe conducted the interview under the strict control of the Chinese Olympic Committee. A committee member sat in on the discussion, and officials with the newspaper had to submit questions before the interview. Additionally, the newspaper wasn’t allowed any follow-up questions.

What do you think? Is Peng telling the truth, or are other things happening behind the scenes prompting her denial?
