Ohio City Implements Abortion Ban

Ohio City Implements Abortion Ban

(RepublicanPress.org) – Several states and local governments began pushing back against Roe v. Wade this year. Texas recently enacted the nation’s most restrictive law on abortion, and the US Supreme Court (SCOTUS) agreed to hear arguments in a Mississippi case that many legal experts think could overturn the precedent in its entirety. Behind this backdrop, a second Ohio city voted to ban abortion.

On Monday, October 25, Mason, Ohio’s city council voted four to three to criminalize abortion within its city limits. Considered by many to be a symbolic move, the new city ordinance will go into effect 30 days after the vote.

The council’s decision follows a similar measure to ban abortions passed in Lebanon, Ohio. Neither city has any clinics offering abortions, but the ordinances are viewed as a means to prevent any person or group from building one within their city limits.

According to an AP News report, Mason’s ordinance bans the possession of prescription morning after medications like mifepristone and misoprostol. However, no one will face punishment for seeking an abortion or abortion-related services. The new measure also provides exceptions for ectopic pregnancies, miscarriages, and medically necessary terminations.

Councilmember Mike Gild told reporters the city wanted to send a clear message that “all lives matter” from the moment an unborn child’s heart “starts beating.”
