North Korean Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Slams US, NATO

N Korea Chafes at NATO's Condemnation

(RepublicanPress.org) – Representatives from 32 NATO allies recently met in Washington, DC, to “set the strategic direction” for the alliance as the world’s nations face “the most dangerous security environment” since the Cold War’s end. Attendees issued a declaration detailing their discussions. A portion of that statement criticized the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and Iran for “fuelling Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine” by supplying munitions like ballistic missiles and artillery shells to Russian forces.

On July 13, DPRK state media reported that an unnamed Foreign Ministry spokesperson issued a scathing response to the NATO declaration. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the official also vowed to take action to “deter the looming serious threat” presented by Western countries.

Taking a page from the NATO Summit theme, the Foreign Ministry used a press statement to denounce the organization’s “declaration,” calling it an “illegal document” that “incites a new Cold War.” The spokesperson also accused the alliance’s stance of violating the “legitimate rights of independent sovereign nations.”

The spokesperson said the Washington gathering proved the United States and its NATO allies presented the “most serious threat to global peace and security.” The official accused the US of “seriously threatening regional peace […] exacerbating the international security environment, and sparking [a] worldwide arms race.”

Speaking on behalf of Pyongyang, the spokesperson warned that “NATO’s strategy for ‘globalization,’ pursued by the US,” could spark another world war. He said the current situation demanded a “new force and mode of counteraction” by DPRK forces “to foil the US attempt” to expand its military bloc. He said American expansionism presented a “challenge to international peace and stability.”

The spokesperson concluded his remarks by vowing that the DPRK would “never overlook or avoid the looming grave threat” presented by the US and NATO. Instead, North Korean military forces would “deter” that aggression and threat of war with a “stronger level of strategic counteraction” to “defend peace and security” throughout the Korean Peninsula and “the rest of the world.”
