Mother’s Day Weekend Shooting Incidents Leave 74 Dead

(RepublicanPress.org) – As of May 13, the Gun Violence Archive (GVA) verified nearly 6,000 firearm-related fatalities in 2024, including homicides, murders, unintentional deaths, and incidents involving defensive gun use. A quick review of the GVA’s latest statistics showed that shooting incidents over Mother’s Day claimed dozens of victims.

The GVA’s latest stats documented 62 shooting incidents, 20 on Saturday, May 11, and 42 the following day. A total of 74 individuals were killed and 28 injured. Twelve suspects died as a result of gunfire, and law enforcement officials arrested six suspected shooters.

Four of the incidents involved the injury or death of at least four individuals, excluding the shooter. The GVA considers sprees that meet that standard a mass shooting event.

  1. Louisville, Kentucky: 2 dead, 2 injured. Police officers responded to an active shooter report at a nightclub at around 5 a.m. on Saturday. Upon their arrival, they found a deceased male victim. First responders transported an injured male and a woman to a nearby hospital, and another wounded male checked himself into the facility. One of the men subsequently died.
  2. Stockton, Alabama: 3 dead, 15 injured. Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) deputies responded to reports of gunshots at a May Day event at roughly 9:30 p.m. The BCSO reported that at least one person opened fire on the crowd after an argument took place.
  3. Northborough, Massachusetts: 1 dead, 4 injured. Local news agencies reported that an attendee of a house party flagged down a police officer to report seeing an individual firing a gun at a party at around 1:00 a.m. on Sunday. Police officials confirmed that first responders transported a 16-year-old victim to a nearby hospital, where medical officials pronounced his death. Worcester County District Attorney Joe Early Jr. later confirmed the arrest of three suspects.
  4. Atlanta, Georgia: 2 dead, 4 injured. Police officers responded to a shots fired report at about 2:28 a.m. on Sunday. Officials discovered six gunshot victims upon their arrival. First responders from nearby Grady Memorial Hospital pronounced the deaths of two individuals at the crime scene. A preliminary investigation indicated that a “physical dispute… escalated to gunfire.”

Media outlets and local officials reported that the investigations surrounding all four deadly incidents remain ongoing.
