Mother Fights Off Leopard to Save Child

( – Americans typically experience the beauty and grace of a leopard while visiting the zoo. However, for residents of India, they represent an ongoing danger — as one mother recently discovered.

On Sunday, November 28, 6-year-old Rahul Baiga was sitting near his mother, Kiran, while she was working. She looked up to discover a leopard had snatched him up and ran off with him.

Kiran chased the leopard for about a kilometer (0.6 miles) before she caught up with it. The large cat was sitting with Rahul in its jaws and its claws wrapped around him. She quickly sprang into action and started striking the leopard with a stick until she could free her son. The leopard then turned its attention to her. However, she grabbed one of its paws and pushed it away.

Fortunately for Kiran, a group of villagers arrived, and the leopard fled. Both mother and child were hospitalized for their injuries, although they were well enough to speak in an interview about the incident a couple days later.

Sadly, incidents like this are all too common in India. Making matters worse, this incident happened in the state of Madhya Pradesh, home to the Sanjay Tiger Reserve area. Newsweek reports that in February, a 12-year-old girl was killed by a leopard while collecting firewood with her mother in the Reserve. Likewise, a 10-year-old boy was mauled to death in a nearby town in November.

Thanks to Kiran’s quick thinking and courage, she was able to avoid a similar fate for Rahul.
