Marine Refuses to Back Down After Superiors Relieve Him of Command

Dozens of Retired Generals Ask Military Leaders to Resign

(RepublicanPress.org) – Several US Marines are praising Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller, saying he’s a hero and applauding him for speaking his truth. On August 26, Scheller posted a nearly five minute video on his Facebook page shredding US military leaders in the wake of a deadly ISIS-K suicide bombing near Kabul’s airport. The resulting explosion killed 13 US service members, sparking the Marine‚Äôs rage.

Scheller specifically named Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley, Marine Corps Commandant David Berger, and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. Dressed in his Marine uniform, Scheller called the three leaders out over their roles in the botched Afghan withdrawal and evacuation effort. He explained that people are outraged because the nation’s military leaders let them down, and no one is willing to step up and accept responsibility for their failure.

Military leaders responded by announcing they relieved Scheller of his duties due citing a “loss of trust and confidence in his [continued] ability to command.” However, Marines who served under him were quick to offer support. According to the New York Post, former subordinate Juan Chavez said that his actions showed “real courage.”

The decorated combat veteran followed up with a 10-minute YouTube video posted on August 29. Dressed in civilian clothing this time, Scheller announced his resignation from the Marine Corps. Refusing to back down from his previous comments, he continued to demand accountability for the situation overseas. He said he was willing to sacrifice his entire 17-year military career to stand up for his beliefs.

It remains unknown whether Marine Corps officials will accept Scheller’s resignation or not. They could refer the matter for review pending a court-martial inquiry, or pursue non-judicial punishment. As a military member, he does not have the same right to free speech as civilians under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
