(RepublicanPress.org) – Former President Donald Trump authorized an investigation into China’s reported theft of United States technology in 2017. Recent Senate testimony revealed continued efforts by China to compromise American biomedical researchers.
On April 22, National Institutes of Health (NIH) official Michael Lauer told senators that more than 500 scientists receiving federal funds were under investigation, more than 90% of them for having alleged ties to China.
The Trump administration initiated the NIH investigation in 2018. As of June 2020, 54 scientists have lost their jobs. A few prominent biomedical researchers face criminal charges, including Harvard University researcher Charles Lieber.
Of particular note, federal prosecutors indicted Lieber for his failure to advise Harvard University of his work as a “strategic scientist” for the Wuhan University of Technology in China. His exact role there is unclear, but Wuhan is believed by many to be the source of the COVID-19 virus. He was also later involved in China’s Thousand Talents Plan, which is reportedly known for recruiting overseas talent to steal information.
Donald Trump did his part to push back against Chinese efforts to steal American research and technology. Hopefully, the Biden administration continues those efforts.
