(RepublicanPress.org) – While some of the dynamics of the presidential campaign shifted with President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race, the core issues remain the same. One of the starkest distinctions between Republican nominee Donald Trump and possible Democratic candidate Kamala Harris surrounds the differing policy positions regarding immigration. A recent news report indicated that this distinction has worked its way into Mexico in the form of the recent launch of a migrant caravan.
On July 22, The Associated Press (AP) reported that a caravan comprised of hundreds of migrants from roughly a dozen countries started working traveling northward from Ciudad Hidalgo. Located in the southernmost tip of Mexico next to the country’s border with Guatemala, the city has become a staging area for migrants hoping to enter the United States.
The AP reported that the migrants hoped to work their way to the US border before the November elections. Group members said they feared that Trump would follow through with his plans to shut the border if he wins a second term.
A migrant from El Salvador confirmed those concerns, telling reporters that members of the caravan were “running the risk” of losing the opportunity to obtain permits to cross the border once Trump assumed power. He explained that migrants feared the possibility that a new administration would stop granting those permits.
Currently, asylum seekers can apply for one using the Customs and Border Patrol service’s CBP One app. That process allows them to set up an appointment with US officials at border checkpoints, ultimately allowing them to enter the country legally.
However, for the app to work, migrants need to reach Mexico City or other territory north of the centrally located capital. Many of the migrants had been sheltering in Ciudad Hidalgo, awaiting permits from the Mexican government to travel north.
Ciudad Hidalgo is roughly 684 miles (1,100 kilometers) from Mexico City. The nearest US border checkpoint is located about 705 miles (1,135 kilometers) in Laredo, Texas.
