GOP Members Vote To Oust Christian Ziegler

( – Headlines exploded last October with the news that a woman accused Republican Party of Florida (RPOF) Chairman Christian Ziegler of sexual assault. Elected officials statewide called on him to resign, but he refused. In mid-December, the party’s executive committee censured Ziegler, stripped his powers, lowered his salary to one dollar, and scheduled a special meeting to vote on his removal from office. As expected, the RPOF members recently voted by an overwhelming margin to oust him.

On January 8, the RPOF held a closed-door session to determine Ziegler’s fate since he still hadn’t resigned. Members voted 199 to three to remove him as the party’s chairman.

Pasco County State Committeeman Shawn Foster entered the motion to expel the embattled chair, and the Republican Party of Sarasota Chair Jack Brill seconded it. According to WESH 2, Brill said he hoped the move to toss Ziegler marked the “beginning of the end” of the party’s tragic journey over the last several months.

Ziegler didn’t attend the meeting to defend himself. He did participate in the RPOF Executive Committee’s gathering in December to plead his case to remain in office.

After the vote to oust Ziegler, the RPOF issued a press release announcing the election of Leon County GOP Chair Evan Power to replace him. As vice chairman of the state party, he had been serving as the RPOF’s acting chair during Ziegler’s suspension.

The police investigation into the unnamed woman’s allegations against Ziegler remains open, and law enforcement officials haven’t filed any criminal charges against him so far. Florida Politics recently reported that court documents indicated that when investigators approached Ziegler about the accusations, he produced a short clip of the encounter he had made using his smartphone.

Law enforcement officials subsequently obtained a copy of the video as evidence. Portions of the video allegedly contradicted the victim’s version of events. However, it also raised questions about whether Ziegler obtained the woman’s consent to film the encounter.
