(RepublicanPress.org) – Joe Biden campaigned on reversing a Reagan-era program called the Mexico City policy that blocked taxpayer funds for any NGOs offering abortion services. Following in the footsteps of Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, he issued a memorandum rescinding the order on January 28.
Republican lawmakers slammed the move.
Republicans Are Furious!
Biden’s actions on abortion have earned plenty of attention from Republican lawmakers over the last week. Several leaders forcefully spoke out against Biden’s decision. For instance, Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) criticized the new president’s executive actions, calling them “pro-abortion” and saying that they “shock the conscience.” Continuing, he urged Biden to reconsider his decision, adding that “human dignity matters.”
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) took an even stronger position on Biden’s move, accusing him of violating the rights of millions of Americans who oppose the idea of their tax dollars funding abortions. He also said the POTUS was pandering to liberals with his “one-sided orders,” upending the moral values promoted by the Founders.
Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) said Biden’s action showed a lack of basic respect for the “sanctity of human life,” adding that the US should be leading the world in the fight to protect all lives, including those of the unborn.
Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) said it was a safe bet to call Biden the most “pro-abortion president” of his lifetime. He also accused Biden of playing into the hands of Communist China’s plans to exterminate Uyghurs, an indigenous group originally from Northwestern China.
A common thread to Republican criticism was the observation that Biden’s memorandum would divide the country, although he keeps speaking of the need to unite Americans.
Recent polling supported that premise. Released on January 27, a Marist poll determined that more than three-quarters of Americans supported significant restrictions on the ability to have an abortion.
Perhaps it’s time for Biden to start putting some action behind his empty promise of unity.
