Criminal Drug Ring Brought Down in New York City

( – New York Police Department investigators and federal agents with the Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) investigated the “around-the-clock” sales of crack cocaine near New York City’s Times Square for roughly 20 months, ending in August 2021. Now, the streets are safer.

On Tuesday, August 10, Audrey Strauss, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced the arrest of 8 suspects for their role in an ongoing conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine. According to Strauss, law enforcement officials arrested the defendants Monday evening. They made their first appearance before US Magistrate Judge Barbara Moses the following day.

As alleged in the criminal indictment, the defendants made “hand-to-hand” sales of crack cocaine around the clock in the general vicinity of 8th Avenue and 43rd Street in Manhattan. The defendants operated two shifts, one working the daylight hours and the other taking over in the evening and selling crack cocaine overnight.

Peter Fitzhugh, HSI’s special agent in charge, said the defendants “gave new meaning” to the concept that New York is “the city that never sleeps.”

The US Attorney’s office charged the defendants with one count of conspiracy to possess and distribute more than 280 grams of substances containing traceable amounts of crack cocaine. If convicted, they face a minimum of 10 years in prison and a life term at the maximum.
