China Warns US Not to Go Against Their Wishes

( – Chinese officials continue their efforts to play a kind of diplomatic game of chicken with other nations. In their latest move, they threatened the United States over rumors about the Olympic games next year.

On April 6, China warned the United States not to call for a boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian threatened a “robust Chinese response” to any such measure.

He also said that politicizing the Olympics could “damage the spirit” of the games’ official charter. He predicted that the “international community” wouldn’t “accept” any calls for a boycott.

The warning came shortly after the State Department confirmed it was talking to allies about taking a joint approach to China’s alleged human rights abuses against Hong Kong, Tibetans, and a group of Chinese indigenous people.

Asked about the Olympic games, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that administration officials “have not discussed… [a] boycott with allies.” However, human rights groups have been protesting the decision to hold next year’s Winter Olympics in China and have talked about calling for boycotts.
