Big Star Slammed for Caving to China

( – John Cena made a name for himself as an actor and former WWE professional wrestling champion. Now, he’s hitting the headlines after making the Chinese angry and then responding in a terrible way.

It all started with a recent interview he gave, in Chinese, with Taiwan broadcasting company TVBS. He used the interview to promote his upcoming movie, Fast & Furious 9, and he stated that Taiwan would be the first “country” to view the movie. His remark drew immediate backlash from China, which claims territorial control over the island.

On May 24, he posted another video on the microblogging website Sina Weibo apologizing in Chinese for calling Taiwan a country. Cena began stating he made a mistake while giving “a lot of interviews.” Continuing, he said he loved and respected China and its people, adding, “I apologize…I’m very sorry.”

As one might expect, the blowback to his apology was swift. Several social media users slammed him, accusing him of bowing down before China’s communist regime. Others accused him of supporting China’s alleged human rights abuses.

It’s one thing to make a mistake. It’s quite another to compound it — particularly when it comes to pandering to communist China.
