(RepublicanPress.org) – On Monday, December 6, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki confirmed the Biden administration wouldn’t send any diplomats or official government representatives to the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games in Beijing, China. She cited ongoing crimes against humanity perpetrated against ethnic minorities in Xinjiang and other unspecified human rights abuse as motivating factors behind the decision. However, the administration faces significant backlash from Republicans for not going far enough.
Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called for a complete boycott of the Olympics. As he explained, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) doesn’t care about diplomatic sanctions because they still get to profit from the benefit of hosting the games.
A diplomatic boycott of the #Olympics is not enough. The CCP doesn’t give a rip about a diplomatic boycott, because at the end of the day, they are still hosting the world’s athletes. Joe Biden needs to stand up to the CCP. #BoycottBeijingOlympics

Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) echoed that sentiment in an official press release posted shortly after the White House’s confirmation of the diplomatic boycott. According to Hagerty, that action wasn’t enough on its own. He said President Joe Biden should demand the International Olympic Committee transfer the upcoming competitions from China.
Notably, at least one Democratic lawmaker joined his Republican counterparts. Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) issued a statement noting bad actors in China had been blocking efforts to investigate the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic and alleged mass human rights violation within Chinese borders. He explained that the imposition of a mere diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympics doesn’t go far enough.
Do you think the administration should push to transfer the games to another country?
