(RepublicanPress.org) – On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a coordinated attack against Israel, killing around 1,200 people and eliciting a strong response from the Israeli government. Most of the subsequent fighting has been in the Gaza Strip, a place Palestinians call home. So far, at least 34,000 people have been killed in the war, and the Biden administration is thinking of some solutions to bring some of that population to safety.
On April 30, CBS News reported it had obtained some internal federal government documents that suggest the Biden administration is considering allowing some Palestinians into the US as refugees. The proposal suggests using the United States Refugee Admissions Program to allow Palestinians with ties to the US who have escaped the Gaza Strip to enter the US. Another idea was to bring Palestinians with American relatives out of the area and process them as refugees.
The people would have to go through a series of tests, including eligibility, security, and medical screenings, before flying to America for processing. Once in the US, those settlers would be offered housing assistance, a pathway to citizenship, and permanent residency. While the segment of the population that would qualify for the offer is likely small, it could be a lifeline for some.
A White House spokesperson told CBS News that it has already helped over 1,800 American citizens and their families flee Gaza. The US is also supplying assistance to those who are most vulnerable in the region, like children with medical conditions, to leave the area for treatment in nearby regions.
The spokesperson also made it clear that the US has no interest in forcing any Palestinians to relocate or to redraw the “borders of Gaza.” The White House is still advocating for a ceasefire and a “two-state solution.”
Democrats and Republicans would likely butt heads on the issue, with the Left in support of such a move and the Right against it.
