(RepublicanPress.org) – A New York appeals court panel recently took the extraordinary step of temporarily suspending Rudy Giuliani’s license to practice law in the state. A combative Giuliani told members of the media his suspension was based on a “one-sided decision” and not on evidence. He blamed Democrats and vowed to “fight back,” adding that America wasn’t a dictatorship yet.
Noted attorney and Harvard law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz weighed in on the situation during a June 26 interview with Newsmax and another one the following day with New York City’s WABC 770 AM. Dershowitz said he thought Giuliani’s suspension wouldn’t hold up since he wasn’t given the benefit of a hearing and the chance to tell his side of the story. Due process of law demands nothing less.
Dershowitz also explained the criteria used by the court to suspend Giuliani’s license was overly vague and relied largely on statements Giuliani allegedly made to members of the press.
“Do you know how many lawyers we would have left if [the court] applied that standard across the board?” Dershowitz asked during a recent appearance on a New York City WABC 770 AM radio show. Lawyers make statements that later prove to be false all the time, and none of them are disbarred, “certainly not without a hearing.”
It remains unclear how long Giuliani’s suspension might last. The former NYC mayor’s lawyers say they fully expect his reinstatement after a court-appointed grievance committee conducts a required hearing.
