Army Soldier Charged for Allegedly Selling Sensitive Information

(RepublicanPress.org) – According to Military One Source, there were over 460,000 active duty members in the US Army in 2022. Their duty is to deploy, fight, and win wars on the ground on behalf of the United States. However, the federal government’s job is to suss out offenders and bring them to justice, keeping the military as pristine as possible.

On March 7, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that US Army soldier and intelligence analyst Korbein Schultz was arrested at Fort Campbell in Kentucky. He was recently indicted by a federal grand jury for conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defense information, bribery, and other charges related to exporting defense articles. National Security Division Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen with the DOJ said Schultz “provided sensitive information to his coconspirator in exchange for thousands of dollars.” That coconspirator reportedly said he lived in Hong Kong.

According to the June 2022 indictment, Schultz provided several types of documents related to national defense that could hurt the United States or give a foreign nation an advantage over the same. He reportedly had top-secret security clearances and access to a wealth of sensitive information. Specifically, the military member was allegedly asked to gather information about potential plans if Taiwan came under attack, documents with information about missiles and rocket systems, and military drill and operational summaries. In exchange, the DOJ claims Schultz received at least 14 payments totaling about $42,000.

The Military Times reported that the 24-year-old Texan joined the Army in late 2018. According to Fort Campbell spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Tony Hoefler, Schultz was assigned to Fort Cavazos in his home state and deployed to Eastern Europe once. The US attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee, Henry Leventis, told reporters that the “illegal dissemination of national defense information” puts everyone in the United States and its “allies at risk.”
