(RepublicanPress.org) – In October 2021, actor Alec Baldwin was rehearsing a scene from the movie “Rust” when the prop gun he was handling unexpectedly fired. The projectile hit and injured Director Joel Souza and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Investigators looked into the tragedy to determine who was ultimately responsible for the incident. In January 2023, Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter, but the case was subsequently dropped.
On January 19, Page Six reported that a grand jury indicted the actor once again for the shooting. Special prosecutors reportedly brought the case for an additional review after new evidence was allegedly discovered, shedding new light on the matter. Baldwin’s team responded by demanding a speedy trial, in documents reportedly obtained by Fox News Digital. According to the New York Post, the communication stated the “fair and speedy disposition” was necessary to avoid “public vilification and suspicion,” given his celebrity status.
Baldwin’s attorneys also reportedly instructed the prosecution to “preserve all evidence,” provide a witness list to the defense, and give them all the examinations, data, experiment results, and chain of custody information surrounding the case. The documents allegedly stated that failure to provide the requested discovery violates Baldwin’s right to a “fair trial” and “due process.”
The new evidence discovered by the prosecution is unclear, but Page Six reported that expert analysis showed the trigger had to have been pulled to fire. Baldwin previously claimed he didn’t pull the trigger on the prop gun. He did admit, however, that he pulled back the hammer. The actor claimed the gun then spontaneously fired, striking the victims.
The accidental death has given rise to several civil lawsuits filed by Hutchins’ family and others present during the shooting. TMZ reported that the plaintiffs largely blamed “Rust” producers for overlooking safety protocols. As for the Hutchins family, they reportedly named Baldwin and several others who they feel carry the blame for the death of Halyna Hutchins.
